I can honestly say that if I weren't living where I am, I would hope to be in one of those Jacobsean urban places. The only real problem in this country is getting out into the country if you live in the city and don't have a car. I hope fervently that peak oil predictions are correct, and the car culture comes to an end soon. That's the only thing that will bring the railroads back and stop the metastasis of "development."
