Seen on the wall in the Borders Books at Canberra Centre.
It reads: "I would venture to guess that anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them was often a woman." [sic]
Virginia Woolf did know how to punctuate, even if the lords of Borders don't. The original text of A Room of One's Own is not online, but all the quotation sites have the necessary comma after "them," which Borders omits.
I'm not a pedant about English, welcome the evolution of a living language, encourage spelling to converge toward the phonetic, etc etc. But this mistake, made by someone responsible for cultivating a literary image for Borders, can't be excused by any of those justifications. Just try reading Woolf's sentence aloud without pausing after "them," as the Borders punctuation suggests you should. You'll have complete nonsense.
