Sydney's Anzac Day parade marshalled in the streets around my office today. All around me, streets are closed to traffic, most empty except for small regiments of the uniformed arrayed geometrically against the rain. I like the marshalling areas of parades more than the parades themselves, just as my years in the theatre often led me to enjoy rehearsals more than performances. I can't begin to describe the poignancy of this marching band or that regiment of veterans: all in formation, flags held high, alone in the rain in an empty street, waiting for the word.
